get into meditation quickly

When it comes to developing a meditation practice, one of the most asked questions is “How do I get into meditation quickly?”. Along my meditation journey I have learned a few tips that have helped me in this area tremendously.

Let's face it, we reserve a certain amount time to our meditation practice, and it's nice for majority of that time to be spent in yummy "meditation". Meditation is a spontaneous experience, however there are certain things we can do to set the scene and get into meditation quicker.

The overarching theme to all the tips below is connecting to the present moment. The faster you can let go of anything taking you away from focusing on the present moment, the faster you will be able to access a meditative state. No matter the form of meditation that you practice, or the intention, the common denominator is becoming more than just mindful of the present moment, but becoming one with the present moment.

Frustration enters when we have expectations for how long this should take and what it should look like. This post is not intended to feed those frustrations, for that will only take you further from the present moment. This post encourages you to find ways to let go of such defenses and allow your mind to drop expectations for the future, or guilt from the past. Therefore you can also look at these tips as tools for helping you let go and experience the present.

Here are 5 ways to get into meditation quickly and easily:

One: Create a Sacred Space

Create a sacred space in your home just for meditation. This allows your mind to associate meditation with this space, and prompts relaxation more easily when you sit down. Here are some tips for creating your sacred space:

  • Gather items that have a spiritual meaning to you like beads, a Bible, Buddhas, or journals.
  • Add an element of nature to your space to symbolize staying grounded such as crystals, flowers, or fountains.
  • Use these items to decorate around your cushion, designating a place holder for your meditation practice and a natural cue for relaxation.

Two: Posture

Having a dignified posture with a straight spine and tucked tailbone will support healthy alignment and optimal comfort.

Also using a meditation cushion (zafu and zabuton) will help you get comfortable quickly and allow you to focus on your meditation instead of pain. Read this blog for more information how to sit comfortably during meditation:

Three: Body Scan

The mind is like a monkey jumping from tree to tree. Help your mind focus and come into the present moment by taking a mindful scan of your body and noticing any spaces of tension.

Then use the breath to breathe into those spaces, releasing any tension as you exhale.

Four: Sound Healing

Gongs and Singing Bowls offer sound healing that aligns your 5th chakra and connects you to the present. Here are some tips for using a singing bowl:

  • Place the bowl in palm of your hand
  • In your other hand grip the velvet handle of the wooden striker
  • Using the wooden side, swirl the striker around the bowl continuously.
  • Once the sound waves have synced you will hear a gong like radiating sound that will align your chakras.

Five: Aromatherapy

Quickly come into the present using aromatherapy such as essential oils and incense. Here are some aromatherapy tips:

  • Lavender is great for evening meditations to calm the spirit and relax the mind.
  • Eucalyptus is great for morning meditations to invigorate the senses and aid contemplation.
  • Lemon is another classic scent used to awaken the senses while also calming the mind.
