Lou Holtz said, "If you’re bored with life – you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things – you don’t have enough goals."

Since we are approaching mid-year, I decided to make a series on goal setting to keep us on track with manifesting our yearly goals.

It might sound crazy to some but I cannot imagine living a life without meaningful goals. They have always been such an integral part of the way I show up in this world and they’re something I can say I truly value.

I’ve been setting goals for myself since I can remember. I had goals for my basketball progress, even goals for growing out my hair as a kid.

But as I developed my ability to manifest my goals, the strategies have certainly evolved as I’ve studied things like achievement psychology and personal development wisdom.

Michael Angelou said, "The great danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."

I love this quote because it highlights how our goals can shape our lives. And ironically, the journey to attain various goals in my life has actually shaped me more than achieving them.

In the process of manifesting many of my goals, my perseverance, my faith, and my knowledge were all expanded. In turn, I became the woman I needed to be to achieve those goals.

So I emphasize the importance of goal setting *NOT* to perpetuate ideas of not being enough, or constantly striving without contentment.

Quite the opposite.

I think it’s important to know how to set goals because it can shape the way you experience meaning in your life.

With that said, let’s discuss how to set goals that can bring more meaning into your life. You can use these tips to check in on the yearly goals you already set or use them to develop new goals.

ONE: Before setting any goal, start with defining what’s most important to you.

This is the time to be selfish.

This is the time to determine what really makes you happy, what lights you up.

Your goals should feed directly into helping you move closer to these values. You don’t want to be living a life for other people or because society says you should live a certain way. You want to live life on your own terms because that is when you can experience true fulfillment and freedom.

In the modAmbition planner, there is a goal setting workbook that walks you through effective goal setting and at the beginning, it has helpful exercises to help you get really clear on what it means to live the life of your dreams. And then it guides you through how to set an effective way to set your goals.

You’ll use this information as a guiding light for your goals. And I want to emphasize these can be personal or professional goals.

TWO: Shoot for the moon!

You might have heard that Les Brown quote that says,

"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land in the stars."

As you’ll see in the modAmbition planner, you want to break your goals into larger than life goals and smaller more tangible goals. The idea is to dream big and then have a practical strategy to taking action towards those goals.

There are many strategies in the goal setting workbook but one worth mentioning is the popular concept of making sure these more practical goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

If you’ve listened to/read/watched any of my content, you know that I believe strongly in letting go of what we can’t control and going hard on what we can.

So in the vein of Yin and Yang, your goals should include both your grandest desires and a grounded plan.

THREE: To wrap up the last strategy I use in my goal setting formula is coming up with a plan for tracking.

Tracking goals has been shown to keep you motivated, accountable, and empowered to troubleshoot anything getting in your way.

One of the things I love about the modAmbition planner is how it infuses tracking into both the goal-setting workbook but also in the planning pages. It was important to me to infuse reflection, conscious personal growth, and habit tracking throughout the planner for the most effective tracking system.

I will say I have used a different goal planner before that I did like but I had to do a lot of tweaking and then use a separate planner for my day-to-day planning, so I love that this planner has pages to track in the day to day.

Whether you use the modAmbition planner or any other system, having a system to stay consistent with tracking your goals is like the icing on the yellow cake with chocolate icing (my favorite by the way).

I hope these tips help you in your process of setting meaningful life goals. Please let me know if you have any questions.
